Joe Arciniega has been elected board president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo for 2019.

His election was at the annual meeting of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo board at International Bank of Commerce community suite. Other officers were president-elect Andrew Carranco, first vice president Wilfredo Martinez, second vice president George Beckelhymer, treasurer Joey Tellez Jr. and secretary Ramon Zertuche II.

Outgoing president John Villarreal was lauded for his tenure. Presidential awards went to corporation member Marisa Santos, Arciniega and Roger Gubser. Named to the board were Christy Alexander, Santos, Jake Spuriell and Lizabeth Guevara. Re-elected to the board were Beckelhymer, Vanessa Carpenter, Juan J. Castillo, Tito Garcia, Eleuterio Garza, Toni Ruiz, Tellez, Kiko Trevino, Bob Weathers and Zertuche.

Corporation new members are Avery Johnson, Eric Galindo, Keith Franklin, Abelina “Lina” Perez, Nicole Werstak, Miguel Gomez, Fernando Santos and J. Albert Sanchez.

The board heard from committees.

Executive director Hector Noyola reported the Benavides Club restroom capital improvement will be finished within one month at a cost of about $400,000.

“The master plan for the entire capital campaign fund is up for final approval,” Noyola said.

Arciniega noted, “We want to recommit to it.”

Board member C.Y. Benavides III echoed, “We still need $10 million for renovation (at all three clubs).”

There’s also talk about building a new club.

Wine tasting fundraiser co-chairman Benavides reported the event at the Laredo Country Club last month was “a huge success.”

“We’ll keep working to make it better as an event of a quality of life project,” he said.
